The Future of Healthcare Has Arrived: WINGS Showcases the “Hospital of the Future” at Aretaieio Hospital

The future of healthcare is already becoming a reality. At Aretaieio Hospital in Athens, WINGS demonstrated how Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G connectivity, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are transforming healthcare delivery through innovative digital solutions deployed in a real hospital environment.

The demonstration took place within the framework of the European 5G-SHEAL project and brought together representatives from the European Commission, Aretaieio Hospital, WINGS, COSMOTE, apoQlar, as well as experts from the healthcare, technology, and research communities.

Visitors experienced live demonstrations of WINGS’ wi.care+ platform, showcasing practical applications designed to improve patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical decision-making.

Continuous Patient Monitoring with Smart Wearables

The wi.care+ platform integrates medical-grade smart watches that continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and other critical health indicators.

Using AI-powered analytics, the platform processes patient data in real time, detects abnormal patterns, and automatically alerts healthcare professionals whenever immediate intervention may be required. Physicians can also configure personalized monitoring thresholds for each patient, enabling continuous supervision both inside the hospital and remotely.

Remote Ultrasound Monitoring over 5G

Leveraging a dedicated 5G network, ultrasound examinations can be streamed securely in real time, allowing specialists to access live imaging remotely.

This capability accelerates diagnosis, reduces waiting times, facilitates collaboration between clinicians, and supports remote consultations in emergency situations or whenever on-site presence is unnecessary.

Smart Defibrillator Tracking

The solution enables healthcare professionals to instantly locate the nearest available defibrillator, both inside and outside the hospital, while continuously monitoring its operational status, including battery health.

This ensures that life-saving equipment remains ready for immediate use and improves the hospital’s emergency preparedness.

Intelligent Hospital Resource Management

Through the wi.sense platform and a network of smart IoT sensors, WINGS enables real-time monitoring of hospital infrastructure and environmental conditions.

The platform tracks energy and water consumption, as well as indoor and outdoor air quality indicators such as temperature, humidity, particulate matter, and other environmental parameters. These insights help healthcare organizations optimize resource utilization, reduce operational costs and environmental footprint, while providing a healthier environment for patients and staff.

Bringing the Hospital of the Future to Today’s Healthcare

The live demonstrations highlighted how next-generation digital technologies can improve hospital operations, enhance patient safety, optimize resource management, reduce response times, and ultimately contribute to better healthcare outcomes.

WINGS’ digital health solutions are no longer pilot concepts but mature, internationally recognized technologies ready for deployment across public and private hospitals, rehabilitation centers, elderly care facilities, and home healthcare services.

As Professor Panagiotis Demestichas, CEO and Chairman of WINGS, stated:”Technology creates real value when it makes healthcare more accessible, safer, and more effective for everyone. Our mission is to develop solutions that reduce response times, support healthcare professionals, and enable patients to receive better care wherever they are. The ‘Hospital of the Future’ is not a vision for tomorrow—it is a reality that can improve everyday healthcare today.”
